I really agree with what you say here. I've only "come out" relatively recently, and some of it wasn't entirely by my own choice... but I can honestly say I am so much happier with everybody knowing, whether they reacted favourably or not (and, in fairness, most people did.)I decided when I first started being actively poly that only a very select few people would EVER know... but eventually the burden of secrecy gets to be too much. I'm sure everyone's experience is different, but for me it was a case of "risking people's reactions is better than any more sneaking around and lying."
If it's only fear of public opinion stopping you, I would recommend every time, go open, march out with your head held high and smile. It's a leap of faith, but it's well worth taking. Couldn't agree more.
