The only exception I'd call out here is that there are truly some people for whom gifts (the giving and the getting) are a way to express love. Receiving gifts is one of the 5 Love Languages and I personally know people for whom gifts are truly emotionally contributory. I'm not one of them and feel as you do, but I do need to accept that there others not like us.
All that said, I agree with the needles obligations and the empty traditions. Wholeheartedly agreed.
