I was introduced to the concept of the Self-Evident Epiphany by a friend of [livejournal.com profile] seinneann_ceoil over a large pot of tea one afternoon. The example she gave was the realisation, several weeks before, that on days when she went out wearing a sweater, she felt warmer. Astonishing!
I introduced her to another on the spot: that the phrase 'Self-Evident Epiphanies' not only has a poetic elegance to it, but also has the most perfectly apt abbreviation: SEE!

Every one of us put our heads to one side, and let out a sigh of delight at the beauty of this newly formed acronym. Ah, the sweetness that is the love of geeks for wordplay.

So the Self-Evident Epiphany, or SEE, is a thought, or a realisation that is perfectly obvious in hindsight, but somehow your brain had failed to register it until just now. A favourite one of mine, which despite its obviousness often fails to stick in my mind: if I keep my room tidy, I don't have to spend so much time Looking For Stuff. I realise this on a fairly regular basis, and it surprises me every time!

What Self-Evident Epiphanies have you had, or heard about?

That you can clean doors! (and other stuff that aren't on a normal cleaning schedule) And when you do, they get cleaner!

That when I'm walking with my binoculars, I don't have to use them to only look at birds - they also work on bus stops and buses!

Doh, I think you just added an item to my list of things to clean before we move house!

Hot glass looks exactly the same as cold glass.

Oh gods, yes this! Reminds me of the time I learned in secondary school that a glass beaker at sixty degrees C is hotter than it sounds. (++Blisters) Ouch!

That modern phones not only work really well as torches, they also work really well as periscopes when you need to peer into a confined space and see what's in it.

If I charge my phone, the battery won't run flat when I need it.

That going to bed at a decent time means I'll wake up feeling well-rested and won't have as much trouble getting up at a decent hour or have that pain behind my eyes or feel so grumpy.

That having a bazillion tabs full of job openings open does no good if you don't actually apply to any of them.

That I have more time to get stuff done IRL when I can manage to stay off the computer.

...those were just off the top of my head. There are more than enough to go around.

I have these things all the time - nice to have a name (or acronym!) to assign to them now!
